We meet our guests at the designated meeting point. After a short introduction by our professional guide, we begin our walking tour in Balat, one of the oldest residential areas of Istanbul. For centuries, Balat has been a place where different religions and cultures lived together, making it one of the best reflections of Istanbul’s multicultural identity.
Our tour starts along the narrow and sloping streets of Balat. While walking among colorful bay-window houses, stone buildings, and wooden mansions, our guide explains the historical development of the neighborhood from the Byzantine period through the Ottoman era to the present day. The importance of Balat for Jewish, Greek Orthodox, and Muslim communities is highlighted.
One of the most significant landmarks of Balat, Ahrida Synagogue is visited during the tour. Built by Sephardic Jews who arrived in Istanbul in the 15th century, it is one of the oldest active synagogues in the city. The guide provides insight into synagogue architecture, religious traditions, and Jewish life in Balat.
The famous Colorful Stairs of Balat are one of the neighborhood’s most iconic spots. Here, guests learn about Balat’s modern transformation, local art initiatives, and the area’s growing popularity. Free time is given for photography.
We continue to the Greek Orthodox Church of St. Mary, one of the most important Orthodox churches in the Balat area. The guide explains the role of the Fener–Balat district in the Orthodox world and shares information about the history of the Greek Orthodox community in Istanbul.
Our walking tour proceeds toward the Fener district. Along the way, the guide рассказывает (tells) about the influence of the Phanariot Greek families during the Ottoman period, the relationship of the area with the Patriarchate, and its distinctive architecture. Guests walk through historic streets rich in heritage.
We visit St. Stephen Bulgarian Church, a unique structure made entirely of iron and one of the rare examples of its kind in the world. The guide explains the construction process of the church, the Bulgarian Orthodox community, and the Ottoman millet system.
